Coral Project: Translating Field-Based Larval Propagation to the Western Indian Ocean

Observation of Coral Spawning at Pointe d’Esny, Mauritius

Coral reefs are vital ecosystems, covering just 0.1% of the ocean while supporting 25% of marine biodiversity. In Mauritius, coral loss threatens coastal protection, food security, and marine biodiversity.

The Odysseo Foundation, in collaboration with Secore International, the University of Mauritius, and Eco Sud, is pioneering coral restoration in the Indian Ocean using sexual reproduction techniques. This innovative method marks a groundbreaking step in restoring coral ecosystems, critical to marine biodiversity and coastal resilience.

An Innovative Approach

Unlike traditional coral restoration methods that rely on fragmenting existing corals, this approach collects coral gametes during spawning events, fertilizes them in controlled environments, and raises coral larvae to settlement stage. This method fosters genetic diversity, making corals more resilient to environmental changes like rising temperatures and ocean acidification.

Collaboration and Capacity Building
Funded by the G20’s Cordap initiative, the project brings together global and local expertise. Secore International provides over 15 years of experience in coral restoration, while the University of Mauritius and Eco Sud contribute vital local knowledge. Together, they aim to establish a capacity-building facility in Mauritius to train specialists across the Indian Ocean.

Scalable and Cost-Effective Solutions
Sexual reproduction is more cost-effective and scalable than traditional methods, producing large quantities of coral larvae for restoration efforts. This approach enables the efficient restoration of larger reef areas, meeting the growing need for conservation solutions.

A Vision for the Future
Over its three-year duration, this project will not only restore coral ecosystems but also create a replicable and sustainable model for the Indian Ocean. By equipping local communities and conservationists with advanced techniques, the Odysseo Foundation is ensuring a future where coral reefs thrive despite the challenges of climate change.

Through this initiative, the Odysseo Foundation demonstrates its commitment to protecting Mauritius’ marine ecosystems while contributing to global coral conservation efforts.
