Blue Carbon Ecosystems Project: Restoration of Blue Carbon Ecosystems

The Importance of Blue Carbon Ecosystems

Mangroves and seagrasses are vital carbon sinks that mitigate climate change and support coastal resilience. Mangroves buffer coastal zones from storms, while seagrasses filter land-derived waters, supporting coral health and nurturing marine nurseries critical to local fisheries.

In partnership with ADD, Attitude Foundation, and Solidarité, the Odysseo Foundation is spearheading an ambitious restoration initiative aimed at preserving and enhancing Mauritius’ critical blue carbon ecosystems. Mangroves and seagrass meadows, vital components of these ecosystems, play a crucial role in combating climate change, protecting coastal areas, and supporting marine biodiversity.

Key Goals of the Initiative

Planting 10,000 Mangroves
The project focuses on planting mangroves between Le Morne and Case Noyale, areas that have experienced significant ecosystem degradation. Mangroves act as natural barriers, protecting coastlines from erosion and storms, while serving as nurseries for fish and other marine species essential to local livelihoods.

Biodiversity and Carbon Stock Studies
A comprehensive study will assess the biodiversity and carbon storage capacity of the targeted areas. This data will help quantify the environmental benefits of the restoration efforts and provide insights for scaling similar projects across Mauritius and beyond.

Promoting Mangrove-Related Entrepreneurship
The project aims to empower local communities by fostering mangrove-based economic activities. These initiatives will not only provide sustainable income opportunities but also strengthen community engagement in environmental conservation.

Building the First Seagrass Nursery in the Indian Ocean using seeds
Recognizing the ecological importance of seagrass meadows as carbon sinks and habitats for marine life, the project will establish a pioneering seagrass nursery. This facility will enable large-scale restoration efforts and contribute to the long-term sustainability of these ecosystems.

A Vision for Sustainability
This restoration project is more than an ecological endeavor—it is a holistic approach that integrates environmental conservation, scientific research, and socio-economic development. By protecting and restoring mangroves and seagrass meadows, the Odysseo Foundation and its partners are not only addressing climate challenges but also enhancing the resilience of coastal communities.

Through these efforts, the Odysseo Foundation continues to demonstrate its commitment to safeguarding Mauritius’ marine and coastal environments, ensuring a thriving ecosystem for generations to come.
