Also known as Giant clam. Diet: 70-100% of nutrients come from algae and the rest from filter feeding.
Max. Size: 30 – 40 cm
Fun Fact: Lives symbiotically with algae (zooxanthellae). Algae gains protection from predation while the clam obtains the carbon by-products of photosynthesis. Known to be the largest bivalve mollusks that exist. Exploited for its meat and shell, this species has recently become nearly extinct within an important part of its range, due to over collecting.
